Town of Bansko

Bansko is a unique combination of a cutting edge winter and summer sports resort, and a historical town where each house tells its own enchanting story.

Location

Bulgaria is situated in South-eastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Romania and Turkey. Other bordering countries include Greece, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro. The country has 4 main airports including Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv and Bourgas and has an estimated population of 7,262,675 (July 2008).

Bansko itself is situated 160 km south of Sofia, 60km southeast of Blagoevgrad, 6km south of Razlog and based at the Glazne river at the North-eastern bottom of the Pirin mountain range. It has a population of 9,000 and Sofia is the nearest airport to the resort with a transfer time of approximately 1.5 - 2 hours.

The Kandahar Bansko apartments are situated in the heart of the resort only 150 metres from the main gondola giving access to all the main slopes and close to all the main tourist hotels and attractions. The main square and old town is only a 10 minute walk away.

The towns name came as a direct connection with the ancient Bulgarian word "ban" which means master. It was established in the 9-10th century and during the 18th century the town became a big and rich town that developed crafts and trade. Caravans of Bansko traders travelled from the Aegean to Middle Europe transporting tobacco, cotton and precious goods such as gold.

Today Bansko has become one of the most popular ski resorts and investment opportunities in the country.
